On March 6, 2022, youth from around the diocese gathered at Christ Church Coronado for The Lent Event. This is the first year for this event which offered young people in grades 6-12 the opportunity to explore an active prayer practice. Offerings included learning to crochet and begin a prayer square, creating individual expressive art and contributing to a group project involving paint pouring, exploring music both percussion and string instruments, and playing them during the campfire at the end, and a prayer bike ride around Coronado.
The afternoon also offered the opportunity for a barbecued dinner, Eucharist under the twinkling lights, and the opportunity to sing around the campfire and roast s’mores. The joy of being together was the best part of the day. One of our EDSD Youth Leadership Council members, Isabella Alcorn (she/her/hers) from St. Dunstan’s offered this reflection, “I’m so glad that I was part of the Lent Event because I got to reconnect with some friends and got to know others as well. One of the best things about this event, and any Diocesan event we have, is the inclusive environment that we cultivate through our respect and love for one another which makes getting to know other people a very unique experience. There were so many activities that I enjoyed doing (like learning how to crotchet) but my favorite activity was painting because I got to collaborate with others and combine our creative talents to make a collage of all of our drawings. I loved the spiritual element that was woven throughout the event but also the communion, prayer, and songs that we all got to participate in together. Overall, this event made me further appreciate the youth in this Diocese and this time of reflection that Lent offers us.”
Featuring youth and youth ministry leaders from 8 congregations, this gathering offered not only deep connection but exuberant joy! Pictures from The Lent Event can be found on Instagram: edsdyouth or Facebook: Episcopal Diocese of San Diego Youth Ministry.
The next EDSD Youth Event will be the Pentecost Bonfire on June 5, 2022. That event will include sailing, volleyball, a campfire, and much more. Details will be available immediately after Easter. Please contact Charlette Preslar, cpreslar@edsd.org, for more information on this or any other youth ministry offerings in our diocese.
