The Spirituality of the Voice: Singing and Chanting as Spiritual Practice

January 11, 2020 @ 9:30 am - 12:30 pm

A morning retreat led by
The Rev. Susan J. Latimer

Cost: $25

(Free for All Saints’ folks)

An experiential retreat, including singing and chanting new and old sacred chants, silence, sharing, listening. We will explore the sacredness of music, particularly the voice, the healing power of music, and the joy of singing in a group. Drawing on ancient sources including Scripture, The Early Church Fathers, The Desert Mothers and Fathers, we will learn new and deeper ways of intentionally connecting our voice with our spiritual practice.

The Rev. Susan J. Latimer began her lifelong love of singing in the children’s choir at All Saints’ Episcopal Church, Vista, in the 1960’s. She has a BA in Music from Yale University and a MM in Music from USC, Los Angeles. Susan was ordained to the priesthood December of 1992 and has served in parishes in 5 Dioceses. Recently she moved HOME from 35 years on the other coast, and is now Rector of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Hemet, CA. Susan is a student of Therese Schroeder-Sheker in the Contemplative Musicianship program, to whom she is indebted for much of the material she will present. Since 2013 she has been a student of Cynthia Bourgeault, author of “Singing the Psalms”, and “The Wisdom Jesus”, and has attended 6 Wisdom schools with Cynthia. She writes sacred chants and loves to share the joy and healing power of singing with others.

This retreat is for everyone – those who sing in choirs and those who sing in the shower and the car. No previous vocal experience is necessary. Everyone has a unique voice which is part of their deep self. Come and lend yours!
