Of course, in times like these, clergy work hard on preaching about pressing social issues in a politically divided world. Bishop Susan is excited to invite you to a special event to help you think about how to preach on difficult social topics:
Diocese of San Diego Clergy Day with Mark Jefferson
Monday, June 20, 2022, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
“Preaching in a Time of Social Crisis:
Strategies and Approaches to Difficult Topics”
St. Paul’s Cathedral, San Diego
Registration Required: $15
Speaker: The Rev. Mark Jefferson, PhD
This class will explore the context for our modern proclamation and help preachers construct a proactive approach to community formation through developing an intentional arc to the preaching life. Preachers will leave this class with a framework for reimagining their preaching and an approach to attending to modern issues. There will be sufficient time for questions.
Our Clergy Day leader will be The Rev. Mark Jefferson, Assistant Professor of Homiletics at Virginia Theological Seminary. Dr. Jefferson’s preaching, scholarship, and engagement with popular culture outline his commitment to be a public theologian. The critical engagement of the American social imagination and African socio-political enfranchisement and empowerment are areas of concentration for Dr. Jefferson’s life and work. Dr. Jefferson is an internationally respected preacher and teacher of preachers, and has been inducted into the Martin Luther King, Jr. Board of Preachers at Morehouse College.
In this time of social crisis and deep political division, please don’t miss this opportunity to think deeply about how you can speak to the issues of the day. Please register today. Your $15 fee covers registration and lunch. As a bonus, you will be able to see the cathedral’s new space! Parking will be available.
