Salt and Light: Congratulation Class of 2020

My eldest son is among the graduates of the Class of 2020. He had his last day of high school and didn’t even know it. He was born into the world of 9/11, and like many, he ended his high school career by marching–in solidarity—chanting, “This is what democracy looks like” rather than humming Pomp and Circumstance with his classmates.

This continues to be a dynamic time that was focused and named for our graduates during Saturday’s Diocesan Baccalaureate service (which is available on our Diocesan Facebook page and YouTube channel). I feel immense gratitude to Bishop Susan Brown Snook, Canon Gwynn Lynch, Chris Tumilty–our Communications Director, and Charlette Presler our Youth Missioner, for coordinating and producing the service.

On Saturday, our family hosted a creatively-distanced dinner of thanksgiving for my son’s graduation. Mentors and family gathered–nearly twenty of us–praying, singing, and cheering along with a ten-foot-tall projected image of Bishop Susan as she recognized this season in my son’s life.

The Episcopal Diocese of San Diego honored our students’ role in the future as it continues to empower each of them to use their gifts for the Kingdom of God.

Having heard of this gift for our students, many friends from across The Church have said, I wish we would’ve thought of that.

Thank you.
