After serving as the Fourth Bishop of San Diego (2005-2017), Bishop Mathes joined the faculty of Virginia Theological Seminary as Associate Dean of Students. At VTS, he taught courses in practical theology and took on additional duties as Director of Contextual Ministry (Field Work) and Director of Anglican Studies. In his last year, Jim took on the role of Associate Dean of Chapel, navigating community worship through the pandemic. In addition to his duties with the School of Theology, Jim has a practice in Spiritual Direction and Leadership Coaching.

David Moseley, Ph.D.

David Moseley, Ph.D., teaches Religious Studies and Philosophy at The Bishop’s Episcopal School, La Jolla, where he also serves as Director of Global Education. Dr. Moseley holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in Law, Theology and Philosophy from Oxford University; and a doctorate in Theology & Music from Cambridge University. He taught Theology, Biblical Studies and Philosophy at the University of San Diego as an adjunct faculty member for twenty years; and also served as the Theologian-in-Residence at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral, San Diego, for a decade. He regularly leads community service trips for his students to the developing world, and has led adult education trips to Israel, Palestine and Jordan. Dr. Moseley was a founding faculty member at the School for Ministry, and teaches adult education classes at parishes throughout the diocese.
The Rev. Mark Hargreaves, Ph.D.

Mark is rector of St. James by-the-Sea in La Jolla. He came to that post after 25 years as a priest in the London diocese. He did his undergraduate studies in theology at Oxford and then took a PhD at Cambridge. The topic of his thesis was the authority of the Bible. In recent years Mark completed a masters degree at the National Gallery in London on “Christianity and the Arts.” He trained and worked as a teacher before ordination and has taught at every kind of educational institution from nursery school to university. He thoroughly enjoys teaching at the School for Ministry.
The Rev. Canon Allisyn Thomas

The Rev. Canon Allisyn Thomas, Associate Rector, has been at St. Bart’s since December 2018 and has responsibility for adult spiritual formation, liturgy, member welcome and incorporation, pastoral care, as well as participating in the preaching, presiding, and “other” parish duties that tend to arise in a place as busy and vibrant as St. Bart’s. Immediately prior to coming to St. Bart’s, Allisyn served in the bishop’s office as Canon for Spiritual Formation, diocesan liturgical officer, and Dean of the diocesan School for Ministry, as well as an instructor in preaching and liturgics. She served as Subdean and Canon for Spiritual Formation at St. Paul’s Cathedral in San Diego for 13 years before working in the bishop’s office, and Associate Rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Chula Vista prior to that. Allisyn is a certified Spiritual Director having received her certification from the Haden Institute, a contemplative Jungian based program in North Carolina. One of her great loves is walking alongside people in their spiritual journeys and continues her practice as a Spiritual Director as time allows. Other duties and responsibilities Allisyn has had since being ordained include serving as chair of the diocese’s General Convention deputation 3 times; chair of the Standing Committee, and Commission on Ordained Ministry; member of the bishop’s Holiness in Relationships Task Force; member of the Bishop Nominating Committee (when Bishop Mathes was elected); member of the Clergy Wellness Committee; and vice-chair of the diocesan Executive Committee. Before ordination Allisyn practiced law, working primarily with the San Diego City Attorney’s office specializing in land use, redevelopment, historic preservation, and general municipal law. Allisyn is married to Skip Thomas, a happily retired deputy public defender. They make their home in Point Loma.

Carlos is the priest in charge of the Latino/Hispanic congregation at St. Paul’s Cathedral, San Diego. He has been active in the Episcopal Church since he was 14. He was ordained a priest in 2008 and served different Episcopal parishes around Puerto Rico. He taught at the seminary, including English, Anglican Thought, Use of the Book of Common Prayer, Canon Law and Sacramental Theology. He holds a certification from the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation as well.

Dr. Mark H. Mann serves as associate professor of theology and Christian ministry and director for the honors scholars program at Point Loma Nazarene University. He is a member of All Souls’, Point Loma where he serves as a lector and chalice bearer and enjoys teaching adult forums. Mark and his wife, Melissa, have four children: Naomi, Nathaniel, Madeleine and Norah.

Since 1991 Orlando Espín has been professor of theology and religious studies at the University of San Diego. Author of seven books and editor of five, he has also published over 400 articles in academic journals in the U.S., Latin America and Europe. Espin earned a dual doctorate in systematic and practical theology at the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. He is one of the founders of U.S. Latinoa theology. He has specialized in the theological study of culture and interculturality, of tradition and traditioning, and of “popular” Christianities. His theological work has earned him some of the most prestigious scholarly awards in the U.S. and Europe
Michael J. Christensen

Michael J. Christensen (M.A., Yale, Ph.D., Drew) is a professor of historical theology affiliated with Drew University, Nazarene Theological Society, Point Loma Nazarene University, and the Episcopal School for Ministry. His courses include: Ecumenical Theology, Church History, Christian Spirituality and Spiritual Formation. Dr. Christensen’s Ph.D. dissertation and expertise is on “Apocalyptic Interpretations of the 1986 Chernobyl Disaster.” He has published eleven books and many articles on various topics of practical theology, spirituality and social justice, and leadership development.
The Very Rev. Penelope Bridges

The Very Rev. Penny Bridges answered the call to serve as the fourth Dean of St Paul’s Cathedral in 2014. A native of Northern Ireland and lifelong Anglican, Penny received her education at Wells Cathedral School and Clare College, Cambridge. She pursued a career in data processing, which took her and her husband from England to New Hampshire in 1985. There her two sons were born and she experienced a call to ordination in the Episcopal Church. In 1997 she graduated from Berkeley at Yale Divinity School with a Master of Divinty, summa cum laude and moved to Virginia.
Penny served six years as Associate Rector of Grace Episcopal Church, Alexandria, and eleven years as the third Rector of St. Francis Episcopal Church, Great Falls. St. Paul’s magnificent music program is a good fit for Penny, who is herself an accomplished violist and singer. Since her arrival at St. Paul’s, Penny has focused on leading the church into the 21st century (the “emerging church” model), updating the administrative systems, overseeing the creation of the digital “Faith to Go” curriculum, installing exterior lighting to give the cathedral more visibility, and developing strong relationships with leaders of other faith communities and of city government.
Penny provides leadership in the Diocese too, chairing the Resolutions committee, coordinating the Episcopal/Lutheran Latino Ministries alliance, and initiating the San Diego chapter of the California Public Policy Network. In her free time Penny enjoys learning Spanish, playing viola in chamber groups and orchestras, and all the benefits of living by the ocean.
David Tremaine, M.Div.

David Tremaine has been the Minister of Formation at Good Sam since July of 2019. In this role he works to coordinate the various formation offerings at Good Sam, including the adult forum, small groups, youth group, and Sunday School, and retreats. He is a graduate of the University of Florida (2010, BS Psychology) and Virginia Theological Seminary (2016, M.Div) as well as the author of The Beautiful Letdown: An Addict’s Theology of Addiction (2019). He lives in Clairemont with his wife Mary Lynn Coulson, who is the rector of St. Andrew’s-by-the-Sea in Pacific Beach, and their son George. Joe Mayer, LCSW

Joe has worked with a variety of people and in a number of settings during his work as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. He began his professional career serving adults and seniors in protective services and worked in a hospice setting offering clinical, spiritual and bereavement counseling to patients and their families. He worked with individuals, couples and families in an employee assistance setting, and has provided psychological services to adults in a County Mental Health Clinic. Along with this, he has maintained a private practice as a Pastoral Counselor for twenty years. He is bilingual and bi-cultural (Spanish). He both teaches and integrates mindfulness into his work as a psychotherapist.
Paige Blair-Hubert, M.Div.

Paige has been rector of St. Peter’s in Del Mar for nearly 13 years, is grateful for the remarkable journey she and St. Peter’s have been on together and looks forward to what God has in store next. Her greatest joy in ministry is encouraging others to live out their baptismal ministries, and watching in excitement and delight as they become the people God is calling them to be in Christ. Born on March AFB in Riverside and raised in an Air Force family, primarily in Alaska and Colorado, Paige went east for college at Boston University, and 21 years later was thrilled to return to the state of her birth. She received her BA in International Relations at Boston University in 1992, and MDiv in Holy Scripture at the Boston University School of Theology in 1995. She continued with post-graduate studies at the Episcopal Divinity School and at the Harvard Divinity School, both in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Paige served as chaplain associate at Boston University’s Marsh Chapel from 1992-1995, as part of the Episcopal Interim Chaplaincy Team at Boston University from 1996-1997. From 1997-2000 she served as assistant and then associate at St. John’s in Beverly Farms, MA. In 2000, she was called to be rector of St. George’s, York Harbor, Maine, and enjoyed ministry there until joining us at St. Peter’s in May of 2009. Paige’s civilian joys include time with her family, a good murder mystery, and a surf session that reminds her that humility is an essential spiritual discipline. She delights in this connection with their parish patron saint, Peter, who also attempted to walk on the waves. The COVID-19 pandemic brought a new delight: nurturing along the many butterflies finding their way in her backyard (swallowtails are a favorite, though monarchs and gulf fritillaries come in close). Iconography is a regular practice of the discipline of letting go, and allowing the process do its work. Paige’s iconography was featured on the cover of Forward Day by Day in 2013-2014 and her iconography blog may be found here: Transformation Iconography. Paige has taught Preaching at the School For Ministry since the first such class in 2013. Learning with and delighting in the newest preachers in the Diocese brings her great joy.
