What is LARK?
LARK stands for Localized Anti-Racism Knowledge, a workshop program created by the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego. It is designed to help people engage deeply with the history, stories, and present realities of race and ethnicity in our region. Instead of generic national content, LARK is rooted in the local context—so participants can better understand what systemic racism has looked like here, how it unfolds now, and what action is possible in our communities.
LARK is a unique initiative tailored to the racial history and current racial dynamics of our region. LARK is designed as a two-day workshop set to take an in-depth look at the racial and ethnic history of the region. By interpreting local issues through a wide spectrum of narratives and perspectives, this innovative program aims to expose participants to a multitude of stories and viewpoints–fostering a broader and more comprehensive understanding of the region’s racial landscape.
Why Participate?
- Gain new awareness of the multiple narratives and voices in our local history.
- Explore unconscious bias, systemic racism, and how they show up in our daily lives.
- Be part of a learning space that is welcoming to all—whether you are new to racial justice work or have been engaged for years. (Sacred Ground participants and non-participants alike)
- Walk away with practical tools for fostering racial reconciliation and justice locally.
What to Expect
Format:
- Two-day workshop with the first day on Zoom, the second day in-person. Both sessions are mandatory for completion of LARK.
- Sessions include historical context, storytelling, group discussions, reflection, and practical applications.
In the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego, we believe that answering God’s call to ministry also means growing in our awareness of justice and dignity for all people. That’s why anti-racism training is part of the preparation for several licensed lay ministries and volunteer roles. Lay Evangelists, Lay Catechists, and Lay Eucharistic Visitors, for example, are invited to take part in this learning as they prepare to serve. Far from being just a requirement, this training is a chance to deepen faith, broaden understanding, and gain practical tools for ministry. By participating, leaders and volunteers join a community committed to living our baptismal promise: to strive for justice, to seek reconciliation, and to walk in love.
