Welcome Ministry, El Cajon

The Welcome Ministry, a program based at St. Alban’s in El Cajon, hosts Loads of Love–a weekly ministry that allows homeless individuals and families to launder their clothes at no charge. In partnership with the generous management of the Eco Laundry in El Cajon, every Tuesday morning, up to ten homeless clients can do their laundry. We provide the detergent and quarters for the coin-op washers; the laundromat provides use of its dryers. Welcome Ministry volunteers greet each person, converse with them, and assure that clients comply with the requirements of the laundromat. We know that clean clothes can raise one’s sense of self-esteem and dignity. This service has been especially important to homeless individuals needing clean clothes for work or as they seek employment, visit doctors, or attend important meetings. Showers of Blessings

The diocesan mobile shower unit operates as the Showers of Blessings. It serves those in need by meeting one of life’s most basic human dignities–cleanliness. The opportunity to maintain personal hygiene can reduce health problems, raise self-esteem and increase employment potential and social acceptance.

Showers of Blessings operates on a weekly basis at various churches in and around San Diego throughout the week. Volunteers host the showers which include: clean clothes, socks, toiletries, fresh towels and a friendly smile for about 15-30 people each week. The showers rotate to other churches around the diocese, and support the Interfaith Rotational Shelter Ministry. St. Paul’s Cathedral, San Diego hosts the showers the second Saturday morning of the month.
