Bishop’s Statement on El Cajon Shooting

Dear Ones,

Yesterday, our diocese experienced what so many other communities have: a police shooting in which an African-American man was killed. I pray that everyone withhold judgment until a clear picture emerges.

We know that police officers have a difficult role for which they deserve our respect and appreciation. However, we also know that African-Americans are not treated equally in our criminal justice system. Again, we need to let the facts in this matter emerge while we encourage calm and prayer.

Thoughtful, measured and prayerful responses by both the police and those enraged by the incident will bring the healing El Cajon needs at this time. All of God’s children deserve to live in safe communities where all are treated with dignity and respect.

Faithfully,

The Rt. Rev. James R. Mathes
Bishop, The Episcopal Diocese of San Diego
