SUMMARY:Braver Angels Workshop "Depolarizing Within"
DESCRIPTION:For people of faith\, civil discourse begins in recognizing the image of God in our conversation partner. Since we are all children of God\, our approach should involve mutual respect and value human dignity. Respect\, not agreement\, is an essential key for a healthy discussion. This workshop addresses how we may inadvertently be complicit in\, or possibly even encourage\, polarization. \nPolarization can be driven by how we talk with like-minded people about those on the other side. Too often\, we stereotype\, dismiss\, or ridicule our fellow citizens who support the other political party\, its leaders\, and its policies. \nThis *FREE* 3 hour in-person workshop teaches participants: \nHow to be more aware of their own “inner polarizer.”\nHow to be critical without demonizing\, dismissing\, or stereotyping large swaths of the population.\nHow to constructively intervene in polarizing social conversations with like-minded people.\nWho can come? Anyone interested in examining their own inner polarization and learning strategies to disagree without condemning or ridiculing others. \nRegistration link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/depolarizing-within-faith-focused-workshop-registration-1975065016632?aff=oddtdtcreator&discount=BRAVER

SUMMARY:SD Pride Parade
DESCRIPTION:Join St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral and Episcopalians from across the Diocese of San Diego in the San Diego Pride Parade on Saturday\, July 19\, 2025! This annual event is a vibrant\, joyful witness to God’s inclusive love for all people\, especially our LGBTQIA+ siblings. \nWe’ll gather at St. Paul’s Cathedral (2728 Sixth Ave) at 8:00 a.m. to walk together to the parade staging area in Hillcrest. Once there\, we’ll celebrate Holy Eucharist in the heart of the city—surrounded by thousands preparing to march. It’s a moving and powerful moment of public worship and joyful community. \nFollowing the service\, we’ll join the parade along the 1.5-mile route\, walking\, singing\, and celebrating the diversity and love that defines both our faith and this event. \nFor those with mobility concerns\, St. Paul’s provides a trolley each year to ensure everyone can participate fully. Space is limited\, so if you’d like to reserve a seat on the trolley\, please contact Susan Jester at jesters@stpaulcathedral.org as soon as possible. \nAll are welcome—clergy\, laypeople\, friends\, families\, and allies. Wear your brightest colors\, bring water and sunscreen\, and come ready to share the Good News: The Episcopal Church welcomes you—no exceptions. \nThis is more than a parade. It’s an act of faith\, a celebration of love\, and a chance to stand together in courageous solidarity. We hope you’ll join us. \nLet’s walk in Pride—together. \n** Please Note: Our starting location can be found at PINK #40. Please be aware of street closures and increased traffic in the area. SUMMARY:The Light Up the Cathedral
DESCRIPTION:The Light Up the Cathedral Service has its roots in outreach\, but it has become a beacon of hope\, love\, and interfaith inclusivity. This year\, you can join the LGBTQ+ community and faith leaders from throughout San Diego on July 16th at 7pm for Light Up the Cathedral and begin your Pride week in worship and love. \nTen years ago\, the newly arrived Dean Penny Bridges had a vision for the Cathedral community that was a unique approach for outreach to the LGBTQ community during Pride week in San Diego. The Pride Parade ends directly across the street from our church\, and the two-day festival takes place only two blocks away. Dean Penny believed lighting the Cathedral edifice in rainbow colors would make a statement to the thousands of people who pass by our location during the week. \nNo RSVP necessary.  Please arrive early as this event reaches capacity.

SUMMARY:Season of Creation 2022
DESCRIPTION:I have heard their cry. I know their sufferings. Come\, now! I will send you. I will be with you.\nExodus 3: 1-12 \nThe burning bush is the symbol for the Season of Creation 2022. Today\, Creation cries out as forests crackle\, animals flee\, and people are forced to migrate due to the fires of injustice. In contrast\, the fire that called to Moses as he tended the flock on Mt. Horeb did not consume or destroy the bush. This flame of the Spirit revealed God’s presence. This holy fire affirmed that God heard the cries of all who suffered\, and promised to be with us as we followed in faith to our deliverance from injustice. \nA Word from the General Convention in 2022 \nThe 80th General Convention of the Episcopal Church recognized climate change as “an all-encompassing social crisis and moral emergency that impacts and interconnects every aspect of pastoral concern including health\, poverty\, employment\, racism\, social justice\, and family life and that can only be addressed by a Great Work involving every sector of society\, including the Church.”  \nFrom “Our Mission > Creation Care” diomass.org/creation-care \n— \nThis year in solidarity with faith communities across the globe\, the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego Creation Care Task Force celebrates another Season of Creation. Several congregations will hold services and participate in Interfaith Season of Creation service.  Please share your church’s activities to provide others with ideas for recognizing this time for prayer\, education\, healing\, and action. SUMMARY:Clergy Day 2022
DESCRIPTION:Of course\, in times like these\, clergy work hard on preaching about pressing social issues in a politically divided world. Bishop Susan is excited to invite you to a special event to help you think about how to preach on difficult social topics: \nDiocese of San Diego Clergy Day with Mark Jefferson\nMonday\, June 20\, 2022\, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.\n“Preaching in a Time of Social Crisis:\nStrategies and Approaches to Difficult Topics” \nSt. Paul’s Cathedral\, San Diego \nRegistration Required: $15\nSpeaker: The Rev. Mark Jefferson\, PhD \nREGISTER HERE \nThis class will explore the context for our modern proclamation and help preachers construct a proactive approach to community formation through developing an intentional arc to the preaching life. Preachers will leave this class with a framework for reimagining their preaching and an approach to attending to modern issues. There will be sufficient time for questions. \nOur Clergy Day leader will be The Rev. Mark Jefferson\, Assistant Professor of Homiletics at Virginia Theological Seminary. Dr. Jefferson’s preaching\, scholarship\, and engagement with popular culture outline his commitment to be a public theologian. The critical engagement of the American social imagination and African socio-political enfranchisement and empowerment are areas of concentration for Dr. Jefferson’s life and work. Dr. Jefferson is an internationally respected preacher and teacher of preachers\, and has been inducted into the Martin Luther King\, Jr. Board of Preachers at Morehouse College. \nIn this time of social crisis and deep political division\, please don’t miss this opportunity to think deeply about how you can speak to the issues of the day. Please register today. Your $15 fee covers registration and lunch. As a bonus\, you will be able to see the cathedral’s new space! Parking will be available. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Bishop's Legacy Society Evensong
DESCRIPTION:The Rt. Rev. Susan Brown Snook invites those who have remembered the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego\, or their Episcopal congregation\, in their end-of-life plans to a special Evensong and reception at St. Paul’s Cathedral. Bishop Susan will communicate her deep gratitude to this society of people who have thought through their estate plans\, and remembered the Diocese in them. She will also give the homily in the Evensong. Instead of sitting in the pews\, legacy society members are invited to sit in the chancel\, close to the altar\, which makes for an intimate service. Surrounded by wood and candlelight\, attendees can bask in the music\, prayers and words from our bishop. \nAnyone may join by simply including a clause in their wills that leaves a percentage or quantity amount of their estate to the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego. If you would like more information\, please contact Hannah Wilder:  hwilder@edsd.org
