Below are the dates and subjects for each class. Applicants must attend all six sessions and complete a project to be licensed. Applications will close July 18\, 2025. SUMMARY:Knowing Yourself Workshop - St. Luke's\, North Park
DESCRIPTION:Knowing Yourself: Ministry from a place of self-awareness – \n“The purposes in the human heart are deep waters; but the one who has insight draws them out.” Proverbs 20:5 \nAs followers of Jesus who are also formed in and by the world\, each of us ministers from a “social location.” This means that each of us see and understand God and the world through a lens shaped by our numerous identities such as ethnicity\, age\, immigration status\, education\, class\, gender and sexuality\, etc. Some of these identities we may be acutely aware of. Others may be less obvious to us. ALL aspects of our social location are useful to God. \nKnowing Yourself makes space for folks to consider all these pieces of their identity in order to:\n• name how they have been formed as bearers of God’s image\n• consider how their social location has equipped them for ministry\n• cultivate self-awareness in community to practice nurturing authentic relationships across lines of difference.\nWe hope you’ll join us for an afternoon of self-reflection and story-sharing. \nNames of facilitators will be available closer to the workshop.\nRegistration is open to a maximum of 30 people and will close promptly on April 27\, 2025 at 9 PM\, or when it is full.\n*This training fulfills one of the requirements for lay licensing. \nRegister HERE\n

SUMMARY:Leadership Academy 2025
DESCRIPTION:Join us on March 1 for Leadership Academy\, a day dedicated to learning\, growth\, and connection within our diocesan community. This is an opportunity for clergy and lay leaders—both new and experienced—to come together\, explore new ideas\, and develop skills for impactful ministry. One of the most remarkable blessings of our diocese is the depth of wisdom and talent within its leaders\, and Leadership Academy celebrates and builds upon that shared strength. \nBeginning the day with Holy Eucharist in the sanctuary of St Dunstan’s Episcopal Church in San Diego\, we will ground ourselves in worship and prepare for a day of learning. Throughout the day\, there will be opportunities to connect with friends and colleagues from across the diocese\, deepening the relationships that support our shared ministry. We will close with a time of reflection\, centering God in all that we do and marking our commitment to serve with courage and love. \nLeadership Academy offers the chance to choose\, à la carte\, from three tracks\, each designed to inspire and equip you for leadership in diverse contexts. \nSTORYTELLING \nCrafting Compelling Narratives for Ministry \nExplore how storytelling captures attention and keeps readers engaged. This session will demonstrate the power of weaving a consistent narrative layer into your long-form content to attract and retain a loyal readership. Learn practical techniques for making your writing more compelling and memorable. \nStories in Motion: Lessons from A Case for Love \nJoin Grace Based Films Director Brian Ide\, whose recent nationwide release A Case For Love has captivated audiences\, for an engaging session on video storytelling. Using excerpts from the film\, we’ll explore how to share impactful stories through video\, focusing on techniques that resonate and inspire. Whether you’re new to video or looking to enhance your skills\, this workshop will provide valuable insights into crafting authentic and compelling visual narratives. \nThe Art of Visual Storytelling \nDiscover the art of storytelling through photography. This session will explore how each photo tells a unique story\, covering photography basics and why photos look the way they do. Learn how to use images effectively to share the mission and vision of your church with authenticity and impact. \nWELCOME \nAccessibility in Action \nJoin the Accessibility Group from St. Dunstan’s as they share their journey toward creating an inclusive and welcoming campus. This session will explore their innovative efforts\, including a creative video\, assistance for people with hearing loss\, ramps and wheelchair-accessible seating\, large-print materials\, gluten-free communion options\, and a quiet room for sensory-sensitive individuals. Learn practical strategies and gain inspiration for making your church more accessible to all. \nRhythms of Grace – Worship that engages across the spectrum of neurodiversity \nJoin members from St. Brigid’s Oceanside will tell stories of their work embracing neurodiversity and promoting inclusion in their worship spaces.  \n“The Episcopal Church Welcomes You”: Becoming the Church We Say We Are \n“The Episcopal Church Welcomes You” is a slogan emblazoned on many of our congregational signs\, promotional materials\, and websites. This workshop features leaders from Uptown Community Services\, EDSD’s LGBTQIA+ Inclusion Taskforce\, and EDSD’s multicultural congregations. You are invited to this honest\, reflective and generative conversation on how we can better live into our declaration of Christ-like welcome. \nFOUNDATIONS \nSafe Church\, Safe Communities  \nThis session focuses on the Church’s responsibility to ensure safety\, integrity\, and trust within its community. Participants will receive training on ethical and theological expectations placed on church workers/volunteers\, the impact of misconduct\, and the Church’s commitment to creating spaces where individuals and families are secure and valued. Safe Church\, Safe Communities training is required for all volunteer and employment positions throughout the diocese. This training will take place over two workshop times. In order to complete all the necessary aspects of the training and receive a certificate\, you must attend both sessions. \nYouth Faith Formation – Beyond Grub and Games \nMembers of the EDSD Youth Leadership Council will hold this informative session addressing many of the questions we hear most often. What makes them feel included in church? What makes them feel left out? What do they value most in youth group? How do they serve at church? How would they like to? Come and hear directly from the council!

SUMMARY:Youth Epiphany Retreat - Keep Watch
DESCRIPTION:Who: Youth in grades 6-12\nWhere: Camp Stevens\nWhen: 1 p.m. February 15\, 2025 – 10 a.m. February 17\, 2025\nCost: $175\nRegistration opens October 22nd at 9 am \nCamp Steven’s is a favorite every program year – the outdoors\, the food\, the friends from around the diocese – it is a weekend filled with fun and faith. \nThis year’s theme will consider how we end our days. In a world that focuses on the practices that start your day\, (Do you make your bed\, have coffee\, exercise?)\,this retreat provides the opportunity to consider the way we close each day with a deep exploration of one of the prayers from Compline. \nKeep watch\, dear Lord\, with those who work\, or watch\, or\nweep this night\, and give your angels charge over those who\nsleep. Tend the sick\, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary\, bless\nthe dying\, soothe the suffering\, pity the afflicted\, shield the\njoyous; and all for your love’s sake. Amen. \nA few of the things you can look forward to: Two nights’ accommodations at Camp Stevens\, five delicious Camp Stevens meals\, campfires\, games\, activities\, star gazing\, worship\, friends\, laughter and more!  \n* Cell phones and other electronic devices are prohibited. \nPayment is due at the time of registration. The full cost for each participant in this program is $225 per person. The Episcopal Diocese of San Diego has planned to cover $50 per student. We will realize that $175 per student may still be out of reach for some participants. Families are asked to prayerfully discern what they are able to contribute and indicate that amount in the payment field. If you would like to contribute above the $175 to assist other youth participants\, you may do that also. \nPlease contact Charlette Preslar\, cpreslar@edsd.org if you have questions. \nRegistration is closed for the Epiphany Retreat. We hope you will join us for NightWatch at All Souls on March 29th. Details and registration will be available soon.

SUMMARY:Formation Leadership Retreat Camp Stevens
DESCRIPTION:Formation leaders are invited to a weekend retreat at Camp Stevens. The opportunity to rest and play with colleagues from across the diocese can be helpful to both longstanding and emerging ministries. Areas of focus for this year’s retreat are below. \nMINISTRY FOCUS \nGather-Transform-Send \nThe unique purpose and work of a congregation is to gather those called by God into Christ’s body\, the Church – a community of transformation of mind\, heart\, and action – and to send these same people into the world both to be and to act as God’s loving and transforming presence. \nTogether we will analize our unique congregations and ministries to think about how people are gathered\, what are the places of transformation\, and how we can grow those\, and how we send people back into their lives – work\, school\, family\, community\, and beyond. \nSPIRITUAL RETREAT \nLiving Compass \nThe “Compass” for Living Compass points us toward the four dimensions of our being: Soul\, Heart\, Strength\, and Mind. These dimensions are interconnected—each one affects the other. We are not compartmentalized people. The different parts of our lives are intricately woven together. Whatever impacts one dimension of our lives (positively or negatively) has an impact upon the other dimensions—the waves of change in one area of our lives invariably washes upon the shores of the other areas. \nThis session will include the opportunity to look with care at eight areas of our lives: Spirituality\, Rest & Play\, Emotions\, Relationships\, Care for the Body\, Stress Resilience\, Vocation\, and Organization. We will look at these areas not with judgment but as we look at a garden – which areas are we watering and caring for right now\, and which would we like to spend more time caring for. \nMINISTRY WORK \nPolicies and Forms\nA full session devoted to a deep dive into the practical structures that allow ministries to thrive. \n\nreview model policies\ncreate needed forms and guidelines in community\nrevive best practices\n\nSmall Group Work & Planning Time \n\nReview We Believe\, the diocesan wide confirmation program and plan for the coming year\nAdult Formation that works – Bring a program from your congregation that has been successful for you\nBring a Godly Play story to practice with other practitioners. If you are Godly Play curious\, this is a great group to join too!\n\nSABBATH EXPLORATION \nNo visit to Camp Stevens would be complete without the opportunity to enjoy our diocesan camp. This sacred place is sure to restore your soul with joy and peace! \n\nHike to Upper Meadow\nlaugh with friends and colleagues\nsing around the fire\npray in the Camp Stevens chapel\nwalk the labyrinth\nPet a goat or a pig\nbreathe deeply\nRest and restore\n\nArrival:  3:00 – 5:00 p.m. Thursday\, October 24\nDeparture: 10:00 a.m. Saturday\, October 26th\nAccommodations: Bergstrom Lodge \nRetreat Cost: $225 \nRegistration Includes your accommodations\, 5 incredible Camp Stevens meals\, and a few special surprises. We have a total of 18 spaces available this year. Please register quickly to ensure your spot! \nRegister Here \nAny questions regarding this program should be directed to Charlette Preslar: cpreslar@edsd.org.

SUMMARY:EDSD Children & Youth Program Information
DESCRIPTION:This year’s EDSD Children and Youth Program calendar is officially out! There are opportunities to play together and to pray together. Diocesan level programming is a great way to allow the children and youth in your congregation to connect with other Episcopal youth\, and to experience programs that might be out of reach for your congregation.

SUMMARY:Lay Catechist Training Registration
DESCRIPTION:A Catechist is a lay person authorized to prepare persons for Baptism\, Confirmation\, Reception\, and the Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows. They function under the direction of the Member of the Clergy or other leader exercising oversight of the congregation or other community of faith. Their work is deeply important in expanding discipleship within a congregation. \nThe course is designed to not just cover faith formation for children\, youth\, and adults\, but also invites participants to consider\, “What does it look like to offer congregational formation?” Throughout the course we will evaluate and adapt curriculum that is already available to meet their contexts. By course end\, each participant will have designed a program that they will offer to the congregation in the year ahead. \nApplicants for a catechist license must attend a six-session training course. Each meeting will be held at 6:00 PM on the 4th Tuesday of the month on Zoom. Below are the dates and subjects for each class. Applicants must attend all six sessions and complete a project to be licensed. Applications will close in July. The six sessions include: \n\nAugust 27\, 2024\, 6:00 PM – Faith Formation for Children & Youth\nSeptember 24\, 2024\, 6:00 PM – Faith Formation with Adults\nOctober 22\, 2024\, 6:00 PM – Formation in Congregational Life\nNovember 26\, 2024\, 6:00 PM – Curriculum Review and Development\nJanuary 28\, 2024\, 6:00 PM – Baptism and Confirmation\nFebruary  25\, 2024\, 6:00 PM – Project Review and Presentation\n\nApplicants may register for the course once they have submitted their Lay License Application and the Lay License Nomination form have been submitted by the priest in charge at their congregation. Please complete the registration below. \nRegistrants will receive an email with more details on the training in July. SUMMARY:Godly Play Core Training Retreat
DESCRIPTION:The Episcopal Diocese of San Diego is pleased to offer a Godly Play Core Training Retreat on July 12-14\, 2024. Summer is the perfect time to plan and prepare to welcome families in the Fall. This retreat will allow congregations the opportunity to refresh their training and to bring new storytellers and door holders into the fold. \nThroughout the retreat\, participants will experience all aspects of the Godly Play method and begin to become fluent in the Godly Play core stories and fundamental practices. Additionally\, Godly Play’s guiding Theology of Childhood is introduced\, so participants become more deeply connected to their work. The circle of participants becomes very strong and trustworthy when this work is done in the closed environment of a several-day retreat\, and participants enjoy spiritual renewal and lasting friendships. \nOver the last several years\, we have had participants from across the diocese. This year\, we are hoping to further expand the circle and the connections that come from doing this deep work together. \nGodly Play Core Training is $75 for members of the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego\, and $355 for those outside of our diocese. \nThe times for each training day are below. You must attend all three days of the training in order to receive a certificate of completion.\nFriday\, July 12\, 3 PM – 9 PM\nSaturday\, July 13\, 9 AM – 5:30 PM\nSunday\, July 14\, 12 PM – 5:30 PM \nSpace is limited.\nRegister Here \n  \n
