The Bishop’s Appeal

When we join together and work as one, we can accomplish more than we can as Episcopal islands in our separate communities. Your donation to the bishop’s appeal sends an important message of support during this episcopate transition. It tells our next bishop, whomever she or he may be, that we love and care for one another in tangible ways, and we practice generosity as a spiritual discipline, giving sacrificially to God from the bounty given to us.

“We are always looking for ways to connect congregations to one another and to their communities,” said the Rev. Canon Nancy R. Holland, canon to the ordinary and diocesan chief of staff. “Gifts to the Bishop’s Appeal strengthen the diocese and transform us into a constellation of light and life in the world.”

Last year, the appeal funded fearless love grants, which the diocese awards to congregations for innovative ministry initiatives. Some examples include: a conversational English class for refugees at St. Alban’s, El Cajon; a new preschool for refugee children facilitated by RefugeeNet; an Asiamerica children’s festival at St. Peter’s, Del Mar; a drumming circle for youth at Good Samaritan, UTC; a prison mentoring program in San Diego; a music summer camp at St. John’s, Indio; and pastoral counseling at St. Paul’s Cathedral.

As you can see from these examples, your generosity to the annual appeal makes it possible for local congregations to flourish. We are a broad and diverse diocese, with charisms that span the spectrum, and yet in the bishop’s appeal, we support one another through our mutual generosity. If you have already contributed to this important work, thank you. To support the Bishop’s Appeal, donate online: www.edsd.org/bishopsappeal. You may also mail a check made out to “EDSD” to: The Bishop’s Appeal, 2083 Sunset Cliffs Blvd., San Diego, CA 92107.
