New Rector at St. David’s

We are happy to announce that St. David’s, San Diego has called the Rev. Jocelynn Hughes to be their next rector. She will begin April 26.

The Rev. Jocelynn Hughes was born and raised in Sacramento. She was an avid ballet dancer and by high school was a member of the Sacramento Ballet Apprentice Company.

She earned a degree in philosophy and religion at Goucher College, a master’s in philosophy and graduate certificate in women’s studies at the University of South Florida, and a master’s from Yale.

Ordained in 2004, she served as associate rector at St. Andrew’s, Encinitas. During her tenure, she oversaw a church school program of over 150 children, built youth ministry to over 50 teens, and started a young adult ministry.

In 2008, she was called to be the campus chaplain at The Belfry, the Lutheran Episcopal Campus Ministry at UC Davis. There she revived the undergraduate ministry, and in 2012 implemented an Episcopal Service Corps program called the Lutheran Episcopal Volunteer Network.

In the summer of 2018, she made the difficult decision to leave The Belfry in order to focus on her family. Currently, she is working on a doctor of ministry degree focused on church leadership and community engagement at Emory University in Atlanta, which she will finish in spring of 2021.

Jocelynn has been married to Chris, an entrepreneur in the tech industry, for 17 years. They have three kids: David, 13; Zach, 10; and Madelynn, 7. David and Zach are hockey players, and Chris enjoys coaching their teams. Madelynn is following in her mom’s footsteps as a ballerina, and she also loves ice skating. For the past two years, Jocelynn has been the co-troop leader of Madelynn’s Daisy Girl Scout troop. The family also includes two small dogs and two parakeets.

In their free time the family can be found enjoying theme parks, watching movies, playing board games, or singing loudly (and badly!) to the Hamilton soundtrack.

She is thrilled God has called her back to the Diocese of San Diego, and she can’t wait to begin her ministry with the amazing people at St. David’s!

Congratulations and welcome back to the Rev. Jocelynn Hughes.

If you would like, you may send her a note via email.
