A Bi-Cultural Education

Students, teachers, parents, and parishioners at St. John’s Episcopal Parish Day School in Chula Vista believe that their school is special. Of course, this is a common feeling at most Episcopal schools. However, our location near the US-Mexico international border and a binational student body combine to provide a unique educational experience for the St. John’s community. For more than six decades the school has provided an exceptional education in the South Bay, and today we continue to prepare a new generation of students for success.

St. John’s families join the school for the solid academic preparation in a safe setting where teachers and students share Christian values. We are dedicated to educating the whole child through a broad program of academic excellence, character and faith development, and service learning. The academic program is designed to train the mind and to strengthen the character of each student in a loving Christian environment. The curriculum is pre-college prep and aligns with the California and Common Core Standards.

Since English is not the first language of many of our students, St. John’s provides an intense emphasis on acquiring English language skills. Our preschool and kindergarten classes deliver bilingual instruction that merges into English immersion and continues to develop language acquisition from first through eighth grades. The low average class size, 16 students, and student to teacher ratio promote active communication and instruction. Our graduates acquire skills that prepare them for competitive high school admissions.

St. John’s students grow up in a binational world. Living, learning and maturing on both sides of the international border provide an experience and perspective that is valuable in the global environment of the twenty-first century. St. John’s has the challenge and opportunity to prepare leaders and give them tools to be successful in a multicultural future.

A talented and dedicated teaching staff presents our students with a classroom blend of traditional instruction with modern educational methods and technology. A variety of off-campus activities provide students with community service opportunities and hands-on education. St. John’s students take full advantage of local educational sites and take class trips to New York, Sacramento, Idyllwild and Washington. Students in third through eighth grades study technology in a dedicated computer lab where they learn basic skills, including keyboarding, word processing, spreadsheets, database, and media presentations. In their classrooms they research, drill, practice on desktop computers and with regular scheduling of a visit from the Computers On Wheels, a classroom set of laptops. Instruction with iPads is a new program for first through through fifth grades, that will begin when students return to school in August.
