SUMMARY:Lay Catechist Training 2025-2026
DESCRIPTION:A Catechist is a lay person authorized to prepare persons for Baptism\, Confirmation\, Reception\, and the Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows. They function under the direction of the Member of the Clergy or other leader exercising oversight of the congregation or other community of faith. Their work is deeply important in expanding discipleship within a congregation. \nThe course is designed to not just cover faith formation for children\, youth\, and adults\, but also invites participants to consider\, “What does it look like to offer congregational formation?” Throughout the course we will evaluate and adapt curriculum that is already available to meet their contexts. By course end\, each participant will have designed a program that they will offer to the congregation in the year ahead. \nEach meeting will be held at 6:00 PM on the 4th Monday of the month on Zoom. Below are the dates and subjects for each class. Applicants must attend all six sessions and complete a project to be licensed. Applications will close July 18\, 2025. The six sessions include: \n\nAugust 25\, 2025\, 6:00 PM – Faith Formation for Children & Youth\nSeptember 22\, 2025\, 6:00 PM – Faith Formation with Adults\nOctober 27\, 2025\, 6:00 PM – Formation in Congregational Life\nNovember 24\, 2025\, 6:00 PM – Curriculum Review and Development\nJanuary 26\, 2026\, 6:00 PM – Baptism and Confirmation\nFebruary  23\, 2026\, 6:00 PM – Project Review and Presentation\n\nIn addition to registering for the course\, applicants also need a Lay License Nomination form completed by the priest in charge at their congregation. Please complete the registration below.\nRegister Here \nRegistrants will receive an email with more details on the training at the end of July. Questions regarding the lay license process/requirements\, please contact our Director of Formation\, Charlette Preslar cpreslar@edsd.org.

SUMMARY:CINEMA of RESISTANCE: Apocalyptic Hope
DESCRIPTION:Is there hope for humanity? As authoritarians threaten to remake democratic society into a dystopian police state\, it can feel like the End of the World to those committed to social justice. Despair is a constant temptation as it becomes harder and harder to imagine a return to normal politics. If there is hope for the future of the human project\, it may well have to come from an apocalyptic rupture in history  — an unpredictable event that opens new and currently unimaginable pathways for justice to be born into the world. \nJoin us for our next free\, public screening\, followed by a discussion. All are welcome. This month\, we will screen a dystopian sci-fi thriller in which the future of humanity depends on the unexpected pregnancy of a Black refugee. Set in an increasingly plausible near-future characterized by vast wealth inequalities\, martial law\, the dehumanization of immigrants and refugees\, and widespread political hopelessness\, this prescient film grapples with the themes of hope and despair in a world of police states and mass migration. Join us as we explore ways to sustain faith in the human project during such a time as this. \nSpecial Guests:\nDr. Jacqueline Hidalgo\nProfessor of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of San Diego\, who specializes in the ways Indigenous\, marginalized communities utilize the Book of Revelation \nHeather Ross:\nAssociate Professor of Philosophy\, Point Loma Nazarene University
