By course end\, each participant will have designed a program that they will offer to the congregation in the year ahead. \nEach meeting will be held at 6:00 PM on the 4th Monday of the month on Zoom. Below are the dates and subjects for each class. Applicants must attend all six sessions and complete a project to be licensed. Applications will close July 18\, 2025. SUMMARY:Lay Eucharistic Visitor Training - November 12\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:The diocese offers quarterly workshops for Eucharistic Visitors. These learning sessions will serve as a resource for prospective congregation-based trainers and Eucharistic Visitors. Whether you are a novice\, interested in being a trainer\, or a seasoned Eucharistic Visitor\, opportunities abound to learn more\, develop\, or improve skills\, and become more proficient in how we serve God and the church. \nHow we become involved in the church’s ministry as Eucharistic Visitors varies. For some\, an inner sense tells us\, “This is what I ought to do\,” For some\, our clergy asks us about becoming involved in this ministry. Others may be requested by their priest\, deacon\, or warden to fill a need in the congregation. Beyond how we begin our involvement in lay ministry\, God’s reality calls us to do so. Jesus’ words to his first disciples also apply to us: “You did not choose Me; I chose you.” [John 15:16] \nThe workshop will include conversations around What Does It Mean to Care\, Small Group Role-Play/Case Studies\, Eucharistic Visitor Preparation\, and Reporting and Tracking Eucharistic Visitations. The Rev. Canon Nancy R. Holland\, Deacon\, will convene and lead the workshop at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in El Cajon from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.\, with two short breaks and a 30-minute midday break. \nYou are expected to read and study two books in advance of the training: With Burning Hearts: A Meditation on the Eucharistic Life by Henry Nouwen and A Manual for Eucharistic Visitors by Beth Wickenberg Ely. Financial assistance is available. Have questions or need additional information? Please contact Deacon Nancy at hollandnc46@gmail.com or 619.823.8998. There is no cost to attend. \nRequirements for Lay Eucharistic Visitor Training \n\nCommunicate with clergy at home congregation to express interest in Lay Eucharistic Visitor training. Have them complete the EDSD Lay License Nomination form.\nRegister for Lay Eucharistic Visitor Training (see below).\nRead With Burning Hearts: A Meditation on the Eucharistic Life by Henry Nouwen and A Manual for Eucharistic Visitors by Beth Wickenberg Ely.\n Attend full training.\nComplete full training.\n\nRequirements for Eucharistic Visitor License \n\nConfirmed member in good standing of The Episcopal Church.\nNomination from clergy at home congregation.\nCompleted Safe Church Safe Communities training.\nCompleted Background Check through The Episcopal Diocese of San Diego.\n An additional 1 hour module is being developed for this license to provide the Eucharistic Visitors with antiracism and social location knowledge which will benefit their ministry. SUMMARY:CINEMA of RESISTANCE: Apocalyptic Hope
DESCRIPTION:Is there hope for humanity? As authoritarians threaten to remake democratic society into a dystopian police state\, it can feel like the End of the World to those committed to social justice. Despair is a constant temptation as it becomes harder and harder to imagine a return to normal politics. If there is hope for the future of the human project\, it may well have to come from an apocalyptic rupture in history  — an unpredictable event that opens new and currently unimaginable pathways for justice to be born into the world. \nJoin us for our next free\, public screening\, followed by a discussion. All are welcome. This month\, we will screen a dystopian sci-fi thriller in which the future of humanity depends on the unexpected pregnancy of a Black refugee. Set in an increasingly plausible near-future characterized by vast wealth inequalities\, martial law\, the dehumanization of immigrants and refugees\, and widespread political hopelessness\, this prescient film grapples with the themes of hope and despair in a world of police states and mass migration. Join us as we explore ways to sustain faith in the human project during such a time as this. \nSpecial Guests:\nDr. Jacqueline Hidalgo\nProfessor of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of San Diego\, who specializes in the ways Indigenous\, marginalized communities utilize the Book of Revelation \nHeather Ross:\nAssociate Professor of Philosophy\, Point Loma Nazarene University
