SUMMARY:United Thank Offering Ingathering
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, May 5 churches all over our diocese will once again gather in all the donations to the United Thank Offering (UTO) via the little blue mite boxes. Parishioners will assemble their United Thank Offering mite boxes that have accumulated thanksgivings and spare bills and change as part of the UTO Ingaterhing. \n  \nThe blue boxes are supplied by UTO. Every time you think of something you are grateful for\, you drop an offering into the box. By May 5\, you may have quite a few gratitudes to contribute to the ingathering. It’s just one more way to express gratitude to God in this life. \n  \nIn its earliest years in the 19th century\, UTO\, organized and run entirely by Episcopal women\, was at times the largest single source of funding for The Episcopal Church’s missionary work. Today its grants support state-of-the-art ministry on the leading edge of the #JesusMovement. A short history of UTO is here. \n  \nUTO’s “blue box” mite boxes and other supplies can be ordered from ShimaofNavajoland.com\, or call 928.729.5540. The items are free\, but shipping charges apply. The boxes usually arrive in four to five days. For other resources visit the United Thank Offering website. \n  \nAnyone interested in serving as a parish or mission UTO coordinator should speak with clergy and lay leaders\, then contact Jamie Wood: jamiecwood3@gmail.com. Jamie is available to speak about UTO and its with in your faith community.

SUMMARY:Wonders Never Cease Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:St. James GALLERY by-the-Sea Presents \nWONDERS NEVER CEASE   \n  \nExhibition of work by artist Lenore Tolegian Hughes \n In her art exhibition\, Wonders Never Cease\, Lenore Tolegian Hughes takes viewers on a journey that equates wonder with life. “Imagine living without the beauty of saffron and yellow falling leaves in autumn\,” she says\, “without the bursting flesh of a ripe red pomegranate\, an abundant field of sunflowers\, or the saturated colors of a glorious sunset over the ocean.  The thought of living without wonder is unbearable.” \n Wonders Never Cease features Hughes’ paper weaving collages that combine secular and divine images into icons of a thought-provoking new reality. The exhibition opens at the beginning of Holy Week\, during which believers are called to be at one with the passion of Jesus culminating in his resurrection on Easter Sunday.  Her work engages the viewer in a visual pilgrimage to discover new and deeper revelations about life. \n The wonder of new life implied by Easter is also exemplified in Hughes’ inspired floral watercolor/collages depicting fields of red poppies\, a basket\, brim full of floral enchantments and a glass vase of gracefully twisting tulips.  In addition\, dried\, pressed and painted golden Galax leaves mingle with pomegranates\, angels\, and a squirrel and a rich egg-yolk colored hibiscus is open to be admired. These golden paintings spring from the heart of a consummate gardener and floral designer. \nHughes works in a wide spectrum of media\, including watercolor collages\, assemblages\, installations and paper weavings. Her signature paper collages weave together contemporary secular images with more traditional images of the divine\, illuminating a fresh\, understanding of the meaning of life and spirituality\, as do her assemblages and installations. Hughes’ color saturated watercolor collages are expressions of the beauty of nature.    \nShe and her husband\, The Rt. Rev. Gethin B. Hughes\, lived in La Jolla for 12 years\, when he was Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego. Upon his retirement in 2005 they returned to Santa Barbara.  In Santa Barbara\, Lenore has expanded her art into creating pop-up\, bespoke art installations for Nordstrom\, Santa Barbara\, and is the designer of the Maze and Wooded Dell at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden\, where she recently had a four-month show entitled The Reason for the Seasons based on stories from Greek Mythology. \nFor more information about Hughes and her art\, visit her web site at lenorehughes.com \nHughes’ paintings\, collages\, and installations are on exhibit from April 13-May 19\, 2019\, in St. James Gallery by-the- Sea. \nThe Opening Reception to meet the artist is on Saturday\, April 13\, 5:30-7:30 pm. Gallery hours are 11 am -2 pm on Wednesdays\, Saturdays and Sundays\, before and after church services\, during Holy Week and by arrangement with the church office for individual and group visits. \n \n  \nFor further information call 858 459-3421 or visit  www.sjbts.org.

SUMMARY:Episcopal Communicators Conference
DESCRIPTION:Make your plans now to join us for the 2019 Episcopal Communicators conference April 30 to May 3 in downtown Denver\, Colorado. (April 29 and May 3 are travel dates.) \nThe conference will begin at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday\, April 30 and will conclude with the Polly Bond banquet the evening of Thursday\, May 2. Our optional pre-conference intensives will be a little different his year\, with each session running two-and-a-half hours\, so participants can pick two (April 30 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.). \nOur opening Eucharist on Tuesday will take place in the soaring nave of St. John’s Cathedral. \nA highlight will be two keynote addresses by the Rev. Nadia Bolz Weber\, author of two books with another due in January 2019. She is an ordained Lutheran pastor (ELCA) and the founder of House for All Sinners and Saints in Denver\, a quirky congregation she served for more than 10 years. \nLocation \nEvents will take place at the Curtis Hotel\, located in the heart of downtown Denver in an area filled with interesting restaurants and shops. It’s also filled with pop culture references – meeting rooms are named for school yard games like dodgeball and keep-away – and we’re working to incorporate elements of that in our conference planning. \nIf you want to book now\, you can do it HERE. You also can book by calling the hotel at (303) 571.0300 and using the group code EPI. \nFees \nThe conference fee for members who register before Jan. 25\, 2019\, will be $375. After Jan. 25\, the fee goes up to $425. The early rate for non-members is $500. The optional pre-conference intensive day will be an additional $125. \nCancellation policy: The conference fee will be refunded in full if cancelled up to thirty days before conference\, and 50% if cancelled up to two weeks prior to conference. \n  \nRegister

SUMMARY:Small Church Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:Small churches\, those with an average Sunday attendance of 30 or fewer people\, are welcome to attend this casual get-together. We will share best practices\, and compare notes as we brainstorm ways to work together to build God’s kingdom. The Rt. Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori\, Ms. Jan Romerdahl and possibly the Rev. Canon Susan Brown Snook\, bishop-elect\, will help us strategize and think creatively about about our small church ministry. \nRSVP to Alyson Terry: aterry@edsd.org by May 1. \n  \nSigns of Vitality in Small Congregations\n\nA generosity of spirit grounded in a theology of abundance.\nThe sacraments available as desired and not tied to the wealth\, geography\, or the size of the congregation\nOpenness to creativity and new experience-new people\, new ideas\, the arts\nCommitment to the ministry of every baptized person-the ministry of every member counts and is received through baptism rather than confirmation or ordination\nExtensive and intensive emphasis on hospitality and keeping the doors open to the community; people in the community know to go there for help\nImmersion in prayer and worship\nSpiritual formation for all is a key value\, with an emphasis on small groups for study and nurture\nIntergenerational participation in all aspects of community life\nExperience of reconciliation and healing of the disjointed parts of members’ lives\nShared leadership and decision making at all levels of the community’s life\nResponsibility for pastoral care\, worship and administration facilitated through shared leadership\nA focus on Christ’s mission in the world and a commitment to social justice through outreach and service\nEcumenical and interfaith partnerships; celebrates denominational identity in an expansive sense and is open to those beyond traditional boundaries\nEcological consciousness through the care of resources\, stewardship and the environment\nIf a small and vital congregation were to disappear\, it would be missed-not only by its members\, but by the wider community as well.\n\nCompiled by Fredrica Harris Thompsett and Sheryl A.
