Bishop Susan is excited to invite you to a special event to help you think about how to preach on difficult social topics: \nDiocese of San Diego Clergy Day with Mark Jefferson\nMonday\, June 20\, 2022\, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.\n“Preaching in a Time of Social Crisis:\nStrategies and Approaches to Difficult Topics” \nSt. Paul’s Cathedral\, San Diego \nRegistration Required: $15\nSpeaker: The Rev. Mark Jefferson\, PhD \nREGISTER HERE \nThis class will explore the context for our modern proclamation and help preachers construct a proactive approach to community formation through developing an intentional arc to the preaching life. Preachers will leave this class with a framework for reimagining their preaching and an approach to attending to modern issues. There will be sufficient time for questions. \nOur Clergy Day leader will be The Rev. Mark Jefferson\, Assistant Professor of Homiletics at Virginia Theological Seminary. Dr. Jefferson’s preaching\, scholarship\, and engagement with popular culture outline his commitment to be a public theologian. The critical engagement of the American social imagination and African socio-political enfranchisement and empowerment are areas of concentration for Dr. Jefferson’s life and work. Dr. Jefferson is an internationally respected preacher and teacher of preachers\, and has been inducted into the Martin Luther King\, Jr. Board of Preachers at Morehouse College. \nIn this time of social crisis and deep political division\, please don’t miss this opportunity to think deeply about how you can speak to the issues of the day. DESCRIPTION:I have heard their cry. I know their sufferings. Come\, now! I will send you. I will be with you.\nExodus 3: 1-12 \nThe burning bush is the symbol for the Season of Creation 2022. Today\, Creation cries out as forests crackle\, animals flee\, and people are forced to migrate due to the fires of injustice. In contrast\, the fire that called to Moses as he tended the flock on Mt. Horeb did not consume or destroy the bush. This flame of the Spirit revealed God’s presence. This holy fire affirmed that God heard the cries of all who suffered\, and promised to be with us as we followed in faith to our deliverance from injustice. \nA Word from the General Convention in 2022 \nThe 80th General Convention of the Episcopal Church recognized climate change as “an all-encompassing social crisis and moral emergency that impacts and interconnects every aspect of pastoral concern including health\, poverty\, employment\, racism\, social justice\, and family life and that can only be addressed by a Great Work involving every sector of society\, including the Church.”  \nFrom “Our Mission > Creation Care” diomass.org/creation-care \n— \nThis year in solidarity with faith communities across the globe\, the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego Creation Care Task Force celebrates another Season of Creation. Several congregations will hold services and participate in Interfaith Season of Creation service.  Please share your church’s activities to provide others with ideas for recognizing this time for prayer\, education\, healing\, and action. SUMMARY:Sharing God's Good News
DESCRIPTION:Sharing God’s Good News\nSharing God’s Good News is a not-so-basic training designed to introduce a fresh\, humble\, effective and Episcopal approach to the spiritual practice of evangelism.  Attendees will also be sent a Participant Guide + Handouts that include a host of resources for sharing the Jesus Movement\, redefining evangelism\, organizing a revival\, sharing our stories\, walking the neighborhood\, improving hospitality\, and more. Also\, you will be given a preview of Embracing Evangelism\, a training that any congregation can host on their own. \nREGISTER\n  \nSaturday Schedule: Sep 17\, 2022\n9:00 am – Morning Prayer (30 min)\n9:30 am – Welcome (10 mins)\n9:40 am – God’s Good News (2 1/2 hours (short break included\, along with lots of group exercises)\n12:10 pm – Lunch\n1:10 pm – Breakout Workshops (workshop options listed in registration below)\n \nREGISTER\n  \nMeet the Trainer\nJerusalem Greer is the Staff Officer for Evangelism for The Episcopal Church in the Office of Presiding Bishop Michael B. Curry. She serves on the Council of Advice for Episcopal Relief & Development and on the board of Edible Theology\, an educational ministry connecting the Communion table to tables we eat at every day. In addition to her work for The Episcopal Church\, she is also a speaker\, preacher\, podcast host (Spade\, Spoon\, Soul)\, and the author of At Home in this Life: Finding Peace at the Crossroads of Unraveled Dreams and Beautiful Surprises\, and A Homemade Year: The Blessings of Cooking\, Crafting and Coming Together\, as well as several faith-based curricula. She makes her home in Greenbrier\, Arkansas on a hobby farm\, with her husband Nathan\, and their sons\, Miles (age 17)\, and Wylie (age 21\, Lyon ’22). \n
