Don’t Wait: Communicate
Make Your Plan Today
Faith leaders have a sacred relationship of influence in the lives of their congregants. Below are several links to assist you to share disaster and emergency preparation resources for your members, as part of September’s National Preparedness Month.
September is recognized as National Preparedness Month (NPM) which serves as a reminder that we all must take action to prepare, now and throughout the year, for emergencies that could affect us where we live, work, and also where we visit. The theme of this year’s NPM is “Don’t Wait, Communicate. Make Your Emergency Plan Today.”
Through worship service announcements, talks and religious education classes, you can promote personal and family preparedness in each of the weekends in September during traditional worship times by encouraging members of your congregation to visit the Ready San Diego website and download a “Family Disaster Plan & Personal Survival Guide” – http://www.readysandiego.org/Resources/Family-Disaster-Plan-English.pdf
A repeated request from faith leaders asking followers to do something simple and practical for their families has a higher compliance rate than requests from other community figures.
These resources are from the San Diego Interfaith Disaster Council. The Council works as a partner and servant of the San Diego County houses of worship and is available as a resource as well. Their website is: http://www.sdinterfaithdisastercouncil.com/about-us/
The Council is planning on a training on developing an emergency response plan for houses of worship. They invite our participation and guidance at whatever level your time permits. Watch this space for future updates.
