From the Bishop
April 15, 2008
Dear People of God,
A great theologian once said, "The church exists for mission, as fire exists for burning." As the wildfires in our communities subsided, a different fire burned brighter in our diocese, our congregations and our ministries. It is the fire of the Holy Spirit which calls us to the mission of God in the world.
When I visit you on Sunday mornings, I witness churches reaching out hands and hearts of love to surrounding souls in the name of Jesus. This is why we exist: to burn with mission. And your striving in Jesus’ name is simply beautiful.
The recent wildfires remind us that we are interconnected in a purposeful way as congregations, as a diocese, and as the broader Episcopal Church. I have signed letters of thanksgiving to hundreds of givers from around the planet who are the church, and who remember those who suffered in our communities. Their generosity, coupled with the help of Episcopal Relief and Development and the leadership of Episcopal Community Services, allows us to provide long-term, recovery assistance to those who have little or nothing to fall back on.
May God continue to bless you in your work and ministry.
Faithfully,

The Right Reverend James R. Mathes
Episcopal Bishop of San Diego
