From Our Bishop
August 4, 2010
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
It was a delight to once again celebrate Episcopal Night at the Padres with over 850 Episcopalians from across the diocese. This was the first time that Episcopal Night at the Padres was inter-diocesan game, Diamondback vs. Padres. Thus as we rejoice at the Padres' victory, we are suitably pastorally sensitive to our brothers and sisters in Yuma!
I hope that the summer is affording you time for relaxation, recreation, and reflection. Perhaps I am becoming more aware of the need for these three R's as I grow older.
Even though we love our work and vocation, playing and having fun does something to the spirit. As I re-create in my workshop, I may simply make a lot of sawdust. However, when I clean up, I am a happier person. Besides our daily prayer, reflection gives us the gift of space, distance and time to be one who listens to God for the broader themes.
Let us be good stewards of this unique gift of God that is ourselves.
Faithfully,

The Rt. Rev. James R. Mathes
Bishop
Bishop Mathes was ordained and consecrated as the fourth Bishop of San Diego in March of 2005.
